Work in Use is a design studio based in Providence, Rhode Island, founded by Wu Hanyen. The studio focuses on handmade furniture and sculptural movement tools.
Wu is a queer Taiwanese American artist whose practice is rooted in woodworking and shaped by an ongoing interest in how we move through the world. After a shop injury, they began thinking more deeply about the connections between physical care and craft. This led to a collection of movement tools designed for everyday use — pieces that belong in the home, not hidden away, but celebrated in their craft and materiality.
Wu spent five years working as a production furniture maker in New York City before earning an MFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. They are currently an Associate Professor in the Sculpture Department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where they teach courses in woodworking, joinery, lighting, and more.
